Wax support material plays a temporary role, but it's not a minor one. While the build material is busy becoming the final pattern, the support is underneath it all, holding up overhangs, bridging gaps, and keeping thin walls from collapsing under their own weight. Once the print is done, its job is over. It gets peeled, melted, or dissolved away. It never shows up in the casting tree.
The trick is how it behaves during those few hours it's needed. It has to stick to the build material well enough to actually support something. If the bond is weak, the part shifts mid-print and the whole layer stack is ruined. But it also has to let go clean when the time comes. No digging. No scraping. No residue that clogs fine details and forces a reprint. The best supports snap off with finger pressure or rinse away in a bath without leaving a trace.
The chemistry behind this gets tuned in a couple of ways. Some formulations lean on a lower melt point, so a gentle warm bath takes the support off while the build wax stays solid. Others go the solubility route, washing out in a solution that doesn't touch the main pattern at all. Either way, the end goal is the same. The support disappears, the surface underneath stays clean, and the shop isn't left with a bucket of toxic sludge to dispose of.
